Strong communities are built through strong leadership, and that was the message at last week’s Executive Speaker Series featuring Erie Events Executive Director Gus Pine.
Business and community leaders gathered to hear Gus share lessons from his career, offering practical insights on leadership, collaboration, and the role organizations play in shaping the future of the Erie region.
Collaboration Creates Progress
One of the central themes of the discussion was the importance of collaboration. Whether in business, government, or nonprofit organizations, lasting progress happens when people work together toward a common goal. Gus emphasized that Erie has unique opportunities to grow when leaders are willing to bring the right people to the table and focus on shared outcomes.
He also discussed the potential impact of initiatives like the CRIZ program and how continued partnerships can serve as a catalyst for future development across the region.
Culture Is Defined by Actions
While mission statements and core values are important, Gus challenged attendees to think beyond the words on the wall.
The true culture of an organization is shaped by the behaviors leaders encourage and the standards they accept every day. Teams become stronger when leaders consistently model collaboration, accountability, and trust.
Learning From Failure
Another key takeaway centered on how organizations respond when things don’t go as planned.
Rather than focusing on blame, Gus encouraged leaders to examine what happened, identify lessons learned, and create an environment where employees feel comfortable speaking up about challenges. When teams aren’t afraid to discuss mistakes, they become more innovative, resilient, and better equipped to solve future problems.
He also reminded attendees that healthy conflict is a necessary part of effective teamwork. Open discussions and different perspectives often lead to stronger decisions and better outcomes.
Looking Ahead
Gus concluded by sharing his vision for the future of the Erie Zoo, including plans to expand from 15 acres to 30 acres, build a new veterinary center, and explore additional amenities that would further connect the zoo and Glenwood Park with the community.
The conversation served as a reminder that leadership extends beyond individual organizations. By working together, investing in our community, and creating cultures built on trust and continuous improvement, businesses and community leaders can help move the Erie region forward.
