On May 27th, The MBA welcomed members and community leaders to our Conference Center for a Legislative Luncheon featuring Congressman Mike Kelly. The discussion centered on leadership, economic strength, workforce challenges and the future of our region and country.
Throughout the luncheon, Congressman Kelly emphasized the importance of unity, civic engagement and long-term thinking when it comes to strengthening both local communities and the nation as a whole.
He also stressed the critical role education plays in shaping future generations and maintaining a competitive workforce, noting that children represent the future of the country and workforce.
Kelly also spoke about global competition and the need for the United States to remain focused, innovative and prepared in an increasingly competitive world economy.
Closer to home, he discussed the potential impact of a naval shipyard in Erie, calling it a transformational opportunity for the region. According to Kelly, a project of that scale could strengthen neighborhoods, support schools and churches, create jobs and bring renewed energy to the local economy.

A major theme of the discussion focused on the importance of being informed and engaged at every level of government. Congressman Kelly encouraged attendees to understand the people they vote for and to pay close attention to local leadership, especially school boards.
The conversation also turned toward emerging technology and the growing role of artificial intelligence in business and society. Kelly described AI as a major game changer while emphasizing the importance of oversight, accountability and ensuring information remains factual and trustworthy as technology evolves.
Workforce challenges were another key topic during the luncheon, particularly the ongoing difficulty many employers face in attracting and retaining talent. Kelly highlighted Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) as an effective strategy for creating stronger workplace cultures and improving employee investment in company success.
The event concluded with a conversation around mental health, which Kelly described as one of the biggest challenges facing society today. He spoke about the constant distractions people face and the need for greater peace, purpose and connection in daily life. During this portion of the discussion, he recommended the book “The Purpose Driven Life” as a meaningful resource.
The MBA appreciates Congressman Kelly for taking the time to speak with our members and community leaders about the issues impacting business, workforce development and the future of our region.
