Policy Issues

Our government affairs specialists break down legislation and policy issues to educate business owners on how their organizations may be impacted, how they can respond to policy updates, and what pro-business policy looks like.
At the MBA, we want to make sure even the smallest businesses have what they need to support their employees–at prices they can afford. Policies determining which businesses can access Association Health Plans, or AHPs, have a significant impact on your bottom line.
One of our main goals is helping businesses reduce health care costs while offering their employees good health insurance coverage and benefits packages–health insurance topped the list of employer concerns in our 2020 survey. As health care costs and insurance premiums continue to rise, policy has the potential to help ease or worsen those concerns.
Qualified, dedicated workers are essential for any employer seeking to maintain or expand their business. However, in many communities, businesses are straining to hire new team members that can fill gaps left by veteran employees. Policies have the potential to present innovative solutions to this problem, such as training incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people.
We believe employers know best when it comes to paying their employees, and that they should be able to determine the wages they pay their workers. Policies containing minimum wage requirements especially impact small- and medium-sized businesses because they rely on entry-level workers.
Regulatory policies can place undue financial burdens, red tape, and compliance mazes on businesses. We keep an eye on these policies so that businesses face fewer barriers to innovation and productivity.
Tax policy is an important tool that can encourage growth and investment, and feed innovation. MBA advocates for a business-friendly tax climate to help prevent job loss and business migration.
Businesses need affordable, varied, and reliable energy sources–energy costs can be a significant portion of any business operation, especially in energy-intensive industries. Energy policy dictates the energy sources accessible to businesses.
